I got a new printer. Whoo. I got it because the last one I bought didn’t have a document feeder, and that would be a nice convenience to have now and then. The new one also does duplex printer, although rather slowly. So great, new printer. Well, it also came with a couple of features that, by way of the fact that Windows is such a POS, are instead bugs. The printer has a couple of (to me, entirely useless) memory-card reader slots. Windows, of course, sees these and tries to assign them drive letter(s)… well, something about this conflicts with how Windows iTunes mounts my iPod (also using a drive letter), so that if the printer is attached, the PC won’t recognize the iPod at all. I have to unplug the printer to get the PC to recognize the iPod, and if the iPod is connected and I reconnect the printer, the printer driver software starts complaining that I’ve connected an “incompatible device” to the printer. Eh, yeah. Not. Somehow I know this isn’t the fault of Canon, or Apple. It’s Windows. Feh.

OK, it’s a given that the Oscars are a complete joke, but what in the hell is going on with The Departed being nominated for five Oscars??! Best Picture, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Best Supporting Actor?!?! We watched it the other night, and we both laughed all the way through. This is, it’s not supposed to be a comedy. Of errors. Let’s see. The story is entirely predictable, and yet not at all believable, the way it’s presented. The dialogue alternate between overblown, hokey and fairly amusing, but again, that’s not really the point. The movie reads like Friends meets The Sopranos, with Friends winning. The acting is mostly quite bad. Jack Nicholson is an old fool in a bathrobe – perhaps he’s supposed to represent Scorsese? Leonardo diCrappio is actually OK, but Whalberg, who I usually like, doesn’t do anything interesting with the purely character role. We were incredulous. The Departed gets a D+ — don’t bother!

“Also setting the new model aside from its existing counterparts, those same people say, may be the conspicuous absence of an optical disc drive.”

Steve must have finally read my letter! Full article on AppleInsider here.

wow. Thank you!

I jetted down to my local indie video store this evening, only to find it horribly, surprisingly CLOSED. It was such a likable little place, although I have to say that I’m not surprised that it wasn’t all that profitable. A true loss for the neighborhood, and now I’m going to trek over to Bernal Heights to use up what’s left of the block of rentals that I purchased. In the meantime, it’s time to check out Unbox! I wonder how long it’ll take to download the flick I was hoping to watch – it says 255Kb/sec…

I never did like James Brown. I just really do not want to hear “Get on up” on more ^*@#% time! I never liked The Who or The Doors either. Don’t you people ever get bored of hearing the *same damn song, over and over*? Basta!

My recent carb swap was so successful that I was inspired to do a bit more work on the Duke. I finally fixed the broken left rear signal that’s been dangling there for months. The stalk breaks easily when swinging your leg over the bike – it’s just in the right place to knock it on the way over. I pulled the old part out and had a look – the replacement wasn’t _exactly_ the same… The new part had a much shorter shaft that fits inside the tailpiece, and I had to run to the hardware store for a 10mm 1.25 pitch bolt – hopefully it’ll do the trick in there, with the help of a bunch of Locktite.

Since I had to pull the plate bracket off to drop the mufflers to get to the tailpiece to replace the signal, it was a perfect time to do Team Incomplete’s Duke Plate Relocation. The plate bracket is cast junk and was already cracked in several places anyhow, so it wasn’t a difficult decision to scrap it. I did cut it down as they suggest and threw a ziptie around what was left of it, in an attempt to hold the remains together a little while longer. Basically all that is left of the bracket is the spacer between the upper and lower sets of bolts that hold the rear ends of the mufflers up under the tailpiece. The “industrial strength” Velcro that I got fit the plate perfectly, and the plate itself again fits perfectly up onto the airbox, as you can see in the pic. Sweet!
